Facial Oils 101: Choosing the Best Oil for Your Skin Type

$
0
0

Kjaer Weis The Beautiful OilBy now, you’ve probably heard about the many benefits of adding a facial oil into your skin care routine. Facial oils are having an undeniable moment, with top skin care experts and beauty companies dispelling the myths of our adolescent years (“Oils make your skin greasy!” “Oils cause breakouts!”). But we’re willing to bet that facial oils aren’t just a passing trend—they’re an important part of a healthy skin care regimen, no matter if you’re acne-prone, sensitive, or concerned about anti-aging.

With new facial oils gracing beauty aisle shelves left and right, it can be downright exhausting to decide which facial oil is right for you. While it’s true that facial oils are for anyone, some oils are better than others at addressing specific concerns, like dryness or dark spots. Oils can also vary widely in texture, appearance, and smell. Here, our top facial oil picks, categorized by skin type to help you choose the best one for you.

Which facial oil is best for me?

The answer to this question depends on your skin type and how you prefer your oil to feel on your skin. Remember, everyone’s skin is different, so we recommend patch testing a new facial oil before adding it to your routine.

Oily skin

Our pick: Indie Lee Squalane Facial Oil

If you’re worried about your facial oil leaving a greasy finish, squalane is a great place to start. Derived from olives, squalane is a lightweight oil that absorbs quickly into the skin, leaving it smooth and supple without excess shine. It’s packed with skin-replenishing fatty acids and antioxidants, and it’s known to promote elasticity and improve texture and tone. Another bonus for oily skin types: it may even help regulate sebum production for more balanced skin.

If you’re worried about looking greasy, here’s a tip: lightly dampen your face with a facial mist (or plain old water) and smooth two or three drops of oil over your skin. Oils spread more easily on damp skin, ensuring that you don’t accidentally use too much.

Acne-prone skin

Our pick: Jouer Cosmetics Daily Clarifying Treatment Oil

Repeat after us: not all oils clog pores. Many facial oils are classified as non-comedogenic, meaning that they’re unlikely to cause acne and blackheads. Some facial oils may also even prevent blemishes—research has shown that oils high in linoleic acid can help sebum from hardening and clogging pores. We love Jouer Cosmetics Daily Clarifying Treatment Oil for its blend of lightweight, non-greasy, and non-comedogenic oils that nourish skin while promoting clarity. Neem oil adds antibacterial and antifungal properties—helpful if you struggle with breakouts.

Fine lines and wrinkles

Our pick: May Lindstrom The Youth Dew

As we age, loss of collagen and elastin from environmental damage can cause fine lines, wrinkles, and thin, crepey skin. Rich, highly moisturizing oils can have a visible impact, smoothing lines, banishing dryness, and repairing damage. May Lindstrom The Youth Dew, a blend of 20 plant oils, gets rave reviews for its hydrating and skin-plumping powers. Organic and sustainably harvested oils from avocado, sea buckthorn, pomegranate, and tamanu defend against environmental stress and improve signs of aging while coenzyme Q10 neutralizes free radicals. Plus, it smells heavenly.

Dry and dehydrated skin

Our pick: Sisley-Paris Black Rose Precious Face Oil

While most oils will moisturize dry and dehydrated skin, sometimes flaky faces need extra TLC. Though it feels lightweight and sinks into skin surprisingly quickly, Sisley-Paris Black Rose Precious Face Oil gets our stamp of approval for dramatic hydration. Omega-rich plum and camelina oils strengthen the skin’s barrier function, protecting it from moisture loss while leaving it soft, smooth, and comfortable. If you prefer a single oil, we love pure marula oil for its radiance-boosting, skin-repairing, and deeply moisturizing effects.

Dark spots and discoloration

Our pick: The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil

Yes, facial oils can even help fade discoloration from hyperpigmentation, sun damage, acne scars, and age spots. Rosehip seed oil leads the pack here; it’s packed with vitamin C and vitamin A (aka rejuvenating retinoic acid) and has been shown to reverse the effects of sun damage and improve the appearance of dark spots and scar tissue. The result is a visibly brighter and more youthful complexion. The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil is cold-pressed to retain all the oil’s skin-loving nutrients, and it’s affordable to boot.

Dull skin

Our pick: Kjaer Weis The Beautiful Oil

The right facial oil can be an especially powerful pick-me-up for dull, lackluster skin that’s feeling the effects of harsh weather or environmental stress. Kjaer Weis The Beautiful Oil is an especially elegant blend of replenishing botanical oils and superstar ingredient Dioscorea batatas, a biodynamically grown root known as the “The Root of Light” for its glow-giving properties. Warm up a few drops in your hands, smooth it over your face, and enjoy bright, revitalized skin with a dewy glow.

Sensitive skin

Our pick: The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Moroccan Argan Oil

For skin that’s prone to redness, inflammation, eczema, or other issues, it’s best to start with a simple, nourishing facial oil that’s free of fragrance. 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Moroccan Argan Oil is just pure, cold-pressed oil from organic argan kernels, so it’s non-irritating and deeply soothing. A feast of lipids, fatty acids, and antioxidants (especially vitamin E) help treat inflammation, defend against moisture loss, and repair damage. It’s also known to be highly non-comedogenic, which makes it a good choice for acne-prone skin. If acne isn’t a concern, RMS Beauty makes an amazingly creamy raw coconut oil that’s loaded with lauric acid, a fatty acid with antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Normal skin

Our pick: RMS Beauty Beauty Oil

Even if you don’t struggle with any major skin concerns, you can still benefit from a facial oil. Simply mixing a few drops into your moisturizer can help with any dryness or dullness you may notice during a stressful week or a cold, dry winter. We turn to RMS Beauty Beauty Oil as an excellent all-around source of hydration and nutrients. It has a lovely, weightless feel, thanks to buriti, jojoba, rosehip, and tamanu oils, and it’s infused with herbal extracts for an extra boost of protection. In the market for a single oil? Pure argan oil is a tried-and-true, all-purpose oil for face, hair, and body.

Glow Your Own Way: Choosing the Right Glow Palette

$

Highlighters, luminizers, and illuminators: it seems like every day another glow-giving palette arrives on the scene, claiming to lend our skin the most flattering and radiant glow yet. And while all the choices are exciting, the seemingly endless options can lead to confusion (and very light wallets). How do you pick the best highlighter palette for you?

To make sense of it all, we decided to round up some of the Beautylish community’s fan favorites. Whether you’re seeking a super-subtle, natural sheen or you want to outshine a disco ball, here are the best glow palettes for every taste and style.

For a barely-there glow

Our pick: Kevyn Aucoin The Neo-Highlighter

Maybe you’re just dipping your toes into the whole highlighting thing, or maybe you just prefer a glow so subtle, your skin could have made it. For those who want an understated glow, look no further than Kevyn Aucoin’s The Neo-Highlighter, a highlighter palette that’s actually all three shades of the brand’s cult-classic The Celestial Powder blended into an ombré design. These powders are so finely milled, the shimmer particles are almost imperceptible—they melt into the skin for a soft, sheer sheen that mimics the look of flattering light hitting your cheekbones.

For a dewy, youthful glow

Our pick: Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze Glow

If Charlotte Tilbury isn’t the first brand to come to your mind when you think of a dewy, natural look, hear us out. Her cult-beloved Filmstar Bronze Glow truly delivers when it comes to recreating the soft, youthful radiance of freshly moisturized skin. The palette’s highlighter powder has a supremely silky texture that seems to blur imperfections—sort of like a soft-focus filter that brings out the best in dull or dry skin. It also comes with a natural-looking bronzer powder for sculpting, shading, and adding red carpet-ready dimension.

For a shimmery glow

Our pick: BECCA Afterglow Palette

BECCA has been a trailblazer in the world of highlighters, and it’s not hard to understand why. The brand’s Shimmering Skin Perfectors, available in cream, powder, and liquid formulas, have been defining the highlighting trend for years. We especially love the powder version for its buildable shimmer, leaving skin noticeably luminous without any chunky glitter. The Afterglow Palette combines three of our favorite Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed shades (plus two mineral blushes) into one handy palette so that you can quickly customize a shimmering strobe effect.

For a bronzed glow

Our pick: Anastasia Beverly Hills Sun Dipped Glow Kit

We get it—sometimes you want to glow like you just came back from a weekend getaway at your own private island. For those who want sun-kissed radiance, we give you a glow kit inspired by the golden beaches of Brazil. These four luminous powders come in warm-toned hues—think amber, taupe, and sandy champagne—that add a back-from-the-beach luminosity to a wide range of skin tones. Layer the shades to create the perfect lustrous warmth with a hint of tan.

For a dramatic glow

Our pick: Natasha Denona Sculpt Glow Palette

If you find yourself mesmerized by an Instagram beauty guru’s look-at-me-now glow, know that there’s probably a Natasha Denona product behind it. The makeup artist’s Sculpt Glow Palette includes two of the highlighters that launched her brand to internet fame—Face Glow Cream Shimmer and All Over Glow Face Body Shimmer in Powder—plus a matte cream highlighter that makes building a megawatt highlight as easy as layering. This is an especially great glow kit for those who like to switch between creams and powders for intense shimmer payoff.

For a holographic glow

Our pick: Anastasia Beverly Hills Aurora Glow Kit

Holographic, rainbow-inspired highlighters are cropping up more and more these days, and we’re not mad about it. The Aurora Glow Kit from Anastasia Beverly Hills brings together six iridescent powder highlighters, all infused with special reflective pigments that shift as you move. The result is an ethereal, otherworldly luminescence that can be built up or sheered down depending on your desired intensity. Mix and match the shades to create a custom unicorn highlight for any mood.

When temperatures are closing in on triple digits, you don’t need to tell us twice to step away from the blow dryer. Applying a quick cocktail of products to our locks and heading out the door sounds like a dream come true. While it’s true that a heat-free hair routine is possible, it’s not the same for every hair type. You’ll get the best results (read: tousled, beachy texture without frizz or fuzz) if you start with the right combination of products for your hair. Here, our friends at Bumble and bumble demystify air-dried styles and recommend the best products for fine, thick, and curly hair.

Fine Hair

Get windswept texture with a hint of grit.

  1. Mist Prep Primer all over your hair and gently finger-comb to break up any tangles. This vitamin-packed priming spray gives fine hair a dose of lightweight moisture to hydrate strands without weighing them down.

  2. Smooth a small amount of Don’t Blow It from the midshaft to the ends of your hair. Squeeze and twist to enhance your natural texture. Don’t Blow It adds polish and body to air-dried styles with a soft, product-free feel.

  3. To create a windswept, carefree look with just the right amount of beachy texture, spritz Surf Spray all over your hair and softly scrunch with your fingers.

Thick Hair

Create soft, touchable waves with sheen.

  1. Designed with dry, coarse hair in mind, Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer softens, tames frizz, detangles, and protects against breakage. Mist it over damp hair and rake through with your fingers to break up any tangles.

  2. For polished texture and bouncy body, apply a small amount of Don’t Blow It from the midshaft to the ends of your hair. Squeeze, scrunch, and twist to bring out your natural texture.

  3. Give Surf Infusion a good shake and mist it over your hair. A sea salt spray and hair oil hybrid, this beachy infusion enhances texture for perfectly-imperfect waves with soft shine.

Curly Hair

Define and detangle curls, coils, and corkscrews.

  1. Detangle, define, and prep hair for air-drying with Bb.Curl Pre-style/Re-style Primer. Spray it over your damp hair and gently rake it through to distribute evenly.

  2. Smooth a dab of Bb.Curl Custom Conditioner through your curls as a moisturizing, defrizzing leave-in treatment. This richly hydrated conditioner can also be used as a rinse-out conditioner and a co-wash—it does it all.

  3. Work a small amount of Bb.Curl Anti-Humidity Gel-Oil through your curls to create glossy, elongated swirls with movement.

Maybe it’s the summer heat going to our heads, but we’ve been opting for easy, unfussy makeup lately. Don’t get us wrong—we’re still all for elaborate full-face looks that take an entire arsenal of products to create. But sometimes simple, slap-on-and-go makeup is exactly what we need. Enter monochromatic makeup, a technique that calls for one flattering shade for eyes, cheeks, and lips. Not only is color-coordinated makeup having a big moment right now, it’s also incredibly easy: just apply a single shade to your eyes, cheeks, and lips.

In the video tutorial above, NYC-based makeup artist Kirsten Kjaer Weis creates an easy, monochromatic makeup look based on one pretty shade of pink. Kjaer Weis uses Cream Blush from her all-natural makeup line, which we love for its dewy finish and effortlessly blendable texture, but you can use any multipurpose hue in your makeup bag as long as it’s eye- and lip-safe. Forget Everything You Know About Glitter Eye Shadow

$

Someone very wise once said, “You can never have too much glitter.” For the most part, we’re inclined to agree. Unfortunately, the glitzy, glittery eye shadow of our teen years came with a few drawbacks—namely, the tendency to leave a trail of shimmer everywhere, from our cheeks and our clothes to every surface we touched. After just one day of sparkly eye makeup, we’d be finding flecks of shimmer for weeks, and the experience left us more than a little glitter gun-shy.

Luckily, eye shadow technology has come a long way since the ‘90s. These days, it’s easier than ever to get your sparkle on without the risk of discoball-like fallout. Cue Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter Glow Liquid Eye Shadow, a cream eye shadow with super-shiny pearl and glitter pigments that glide over eyes with the flick of a wand. Unlike loose glitter, there’s no flaking or fallout—once it dries down, it locks into place until you take it off. To help you ease back into the world of glitter eye makeup, we put together a quick tutorial with this shimmery superhero and a few of our other Stila favorites. Behold, a shimmering smoky eye that shines so bright, you just might need shades

What You’ll Need:

Step 1. Create a Brilliant Bronze Base

Apply Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter Glow Liquid Eye Shadow in Bronzed Bell, a bronze loaded with silver and copper glitter, to the center of your eyelid. You can dab the wand applicator directly onto your skin, or tap an eye shadow brush onto the wand to pick up the product. Using a blending brush (we used Wayne Goss Brush 19), blend the eye shadow all over your eyelid before it dries down.

Step 2. Add Shimmering, Smoky Definition

Next, take an eyeshadow brush and tap it on the wand of Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter Glow Liquid Eye Shadow in Molten Midnight, a deep black with silver and gold sparkle. After you pick up some product, make a few dots along the crease and outer corner of your eye. (Makeup artist’s tip: use a pencil brush, like Wayne Goss Brush 05, for more precision application.) Blend the dots with a clean brush to sculpt your eye socket, pulling the shadow out towards the tip of your brow to form a soft cat eye.

Step 3. Finish with Liner Lipstick

To complete the look, draw a thin line of Stila Stay All Day Liquid Liner in Intense Black along your upper eyelashes to add definition. Curl your lashes, apply your favorite mascara, and finish with a natural nude lip that won’t steal the spotlight from your flashy lids. Anusha M. wears Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Dolce, a soft cinnamon peach with a long-wearing matte finish.

Here’s Why You Should Use a Hair Primer

$
0
0

Most of us are intimately familiar with the power of a good makeup primer. With it, your foundation glides on like silk, your skin maintains a fresh, matte finish, and your makeup doesn’t budge. Without it, you can be sure your look will melt off by lunchtime. It won’t come as a surprise, then, to learn that there are primers for your hair—and no matter if your locks are fine and frizzy or thick and curly, you should definitely be using one.

What’s a hair primer?

Let’s start at the beginning: a hair primer is a product that preps hair for styling. Primers are generally made up of a blend of conditioning and protective ingredients, and they come in a variety of different formulas. Depending on your hair type and styling routine, you may opt for a cream, spray, lotion, or balm primer. Hair primers are an essential pre-styling step in your haircare routine—especially if you blow dry or style with hot tools.

What does a hair primer do?

A better question might be, what don’t hair primers do? They protect your hair against damage from heat styling and the environment and minimize breakage from detangling and brushing. They condition and hydrate, leaving your locks softer, shinier, stronger, and more manageable—much like leave-in conditioners. They also help other styling products work better and extend the life of your style. Hair primers even moonlight as hair refreshers, adding bounce and texture back into second-day styles.

Which primer is best for my hair?

To answer this question, we brought in the experts at Bumble and bumble to help sort through the options and find the perfect primer for every hair type.

For fine to medium hair

Bb.Prep Primer

This lightweight spray is an excellent all-around primer, especially for fine hair. Packed with nourishing vitamins, it detangles, preps hair for styling, and refreshes second-day styles with a weightless, no-product feel.

For medium to thick hair

Tonic Lotion Primer

Inspired by the elixirs used in old-school barbershops, this medium-weight primer spray is best for medium to thick hair that’s healthy, dry, damaged, or color-treated. Invigorating herbs and essential oils refresh your scalp while hydrating and detangling strands.

For dry or damaged hair

Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer

If your hair needs a little extra TLC, opt for this oil-infused spray. It instantly softens, silkens, and detangles coarse, brittle hair while taming frizz for sleek, shiny styles. Don’t be turned off by the long list of deeply reparative oils—it goes on weightlessly.

For wavy or curly hair

Bb.Curl Pre-Style/Re-Style Primer

Formulated with curls and waves in mind, this moisturizing primer not only detangles and hydrates—it also works to lightly define and shape curls on contact. UV filters protect hair from the drying effects of the sun, and when used on day two, it whips second-day curls back into shape.

How to Defend Your Hair from Sun Damage

$
0
0

The best things about summer—sunny days, pool parties, beach trips—are often bad news for hair. While we’re all well aware of the benefits of slathering our arms, legs, and face with SPF, we don’t talk much about sunscreen for hair. UV rays won’t give your hair a sunburn, but they do dry out stands, leading to brittleness, breakage, frizz, dull color, and a coarse, dry feel. Too much sun also makes hair more susceptible to future damage by destroying the cuticle, leaving the inner cortex exposed and vulnerable to saltwater, chlorine, and heat styling.

Protecting your hair from the summer sun’s damaging rays, luckily, is as easy as incorporating a UV-protective styling product into your hair care routine. Here, our favorite problem-solving stylers from Bumble and bumble—all enriched with sun-proofing UV filters to protect your hair from too much summer fun.

For all hair types that need a primer

Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer

We’ve sung the praises of hair primers before, but here’s a refresher: they protect hair against damage from styling while conditioning and hydrating. Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer does everything short of styling your hair for you. Just a few spritzes soften, detangle, tame frizz, and protect from sun damage with UV filters. It’s oil-infused, but don’t worry—it goes on surprisingly weightlessly.

For dry, dull hair that craves shine

Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil

Forget everything you know about hair oils. This super-light oil soaks into strands instantly—yes, even fine, thin hair—to soften and add silky shine. It also defends against breakage from brushing, heat styling, and UV rays. Work into wet hair before styling or smooth over dry hair before you head out the door for a dose of sunscreen and shine.

For perfect air-dried styles

Don’t Blow It

Summer often means rising temperatures, and when it’s hot outside, the last thing we want to do is wrestle with blow dryers and curling irons. In addition to shielding hair from the sun’s rays, this crazy-good styling cream helps air-dried hair look its best by enhancing texture and stopping frizz in its tracks. Be forewarned: you may never go back to heat styling.

For beachy, piecey waves

Surf Infusion

If tousled, textured, just-spent-the-day-at-the-beach waves are your thing, this UV-protective salt spray might be your new best friend. Formulated with tropical oils and sea botanicals, it creates beachy body without the drying, crunchy effect that’s common with surf sprays.

For waves and curls that need a boost

Bb.Curl Pre-Style/Re-Style Primer

Created with curls and waves in mind, this UV-protectant primer not only detangles and hydrates, it also works to lightly define and shape curls on contact. When used on day two, it whips puffy, deflated curls back into shape.

For sleek, defined curls without crunch

Bb.Curl Defining Creme

This curl cream adds shape, definition, and separation to curls, ringlets, and corkscrews with a soft, flexible finish. UV filters safeguard dehydration-prone hair from the drying effects of summer sun while a special blend of polymers offer plenty of bounce and movement. Curls look naturally sleek and shapely—not slicked back.

For sun protection anytime, anywhere

Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Dry Oil Finishing Spray

If you prefer a no-fuss sunscreen spray to use no matter how your hair is styled, give this ultra-lightweight micromist a try. It softens, smooths flyaways, and gives hair a subtle luster without collapsing styles or adding unwanted texture. It’s easy to toss in your beach bag for sun protection on the go.

Meet the Stars: Inside Jeffree Star’s Family Collection

$

Even casual fans of Jeffree Star have heard about his buzzy new collection by now, and those of us who think that Jeffree Star and his boyfriend Nathan Schwandt are #couplegoals have even more reason to be excited. Jeffree recently gave us a sneak peek of the Star Family Collection, which is themed around Jeffree, Nathan, and their fur children (pomeranians Diva, Diamond, Delicious, and Daddy).

The collection will include six Velour Liquid Lipsticks (one for each member of the family!), plus two new Velour Lip Scrubs and a very intriguing Skin Frost. To celebrate the impending launch, let’s take a look at Jeffree Star’s little family and the new shades of Velour Liquid Lipstick for each member, shall we?

Jeffree

With his fierce and fearless personality, it makes sense that the shade Jeffree chose to represent himself would be a bold brick red called “Wifey.” Jeffree describes it as “darker than Redrum but lighter than Unicorn Blood.”

Nathan

Inspired by how much he loves when Jeffree wears a nude lip, “Nathan” is a peachy terracotta nude with bright, warm tones. Designed by Nathan himself, it’s unlike every other nude shade in Jeffree’s collection.

Diva

Jeffree’s first dog, Diva, has sported hot pink fur in the past, so it’s no surprise that “Diva” is a bright, warm pink with gold metallic shimmer (!). Jeffree describes it as “Prom Night’s Barbie sister.” You have our attention.

Diamond

The second pup in the Star pack, Diamond’s feisty personality is encapsulated in “Diamond,” a bright pastel periwinkle blue. It’s the perfect shade for the dog who, according to Jeffree and Nathan, basically runs the household.

Delicious

Jeffree and Nathan got Delicious, an all-black pomeranian, soon after they started dating. His shade, “Delicious,” is a chocolatey mauve brown inspired by the lighter color of his fur when he was a puppy.

Daddy

The newest addition to the family, Daddy, is a very cute sable pomeranian who has stolen the internet’s hearts. The baby of the family, his shade “Baby Daddy” is a soft and sweet nude caramel.

The classic smoky eye is a makeup technique that everyone should have in their arsenal. Not only does it give you an instant sultry, smoldering, rockstar vibe, it’s endlessly customizable with different eye color shades, textures, and finishes. Unfortunately, it can also be hard to master. Maybe it’s the fact that it involves so much blending—or that if you mess up, it’s hard to go back. Either way, we’re always looking for ways to make our smoky eyes quicker and easier.

1. Brighten

2. Enhance

4. Bronze

6. Pop

3. Smoke

5. Swish

7. Highlight

Enter the newest addition to Charlotte Tilbury’s basically genius Instant Look in a Palette line: Smokey Eye Beauty. It has everything you need to create a dreamy, glowing, hazy look, and its color-by-numbers design makes it ridiculously easy to follow. It also includes some iconic Charlotte Tilbury cult classics: the bronzer from Filmstar Bronze & Glow, the two blush shades from Cheek to Chic in First Love, and Bar of Gold highlighter. Here, we walk through how to use the palette to create a soft, subtle smoky eye for day and how to amp it up for night.

What You’ll Need:
  • Foundation
  • Concealer
  • Charlotte Tilbury Instant Look in a Palette Smokey Eye Beauty
  • Flat eye shadow brush
  • Eye shadow blending brush
  • Precision eye shadow brush
  • Brown eyeliner
  • Mascara
  • Bronzer brush
  • Blush brush
  • Nude lipstick
  • Eye shadow shader brush
  • Black eyeliner
  • Dark lipstick

1. Brighten

2. Enhance

3. Smoke

4. Bronze

5. Swish

6. Pop

7. Highlight

STEP 1
Start with a Clear, Even Base

Apply foundation and concealer to even out your complexion, if desired. Above, Jinghan wears Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation in 2 Fair mixed with an equal amount of Wonderglow for a more dewy finish, plus The Retoucher in 1 Fair under her eyes and around her nose.

STEP 2
Prime and Brighten Your Eyes

Using a flat eye shadow brush like Chikuhodo GSN 9, pack the Eye Brighten shade from the Smokey Eye Beauty palette onto your lid with a pressing and patting motion. Start at the lashline and blend upward to the crease in a half-moon shape.

STEP 3
Create a Soft Wing

With the same pressing motion, apply Eye Brighten to the outer corner of the eye in a wing shape. Use a fluffy blending brush, like Wayne Goss Brush 19, to blend the edges. Your wing should be shaped like a cat eye but without any harsh lines.

STEP 4
Define the Lashline

With a precision brush (we used Wayne Goss Brush 05 here), blend the Eye Enhance shade from the palette along your upper and lower lashline. This soft, warm brown shade creates subtle definition.

STEP 5
Add Some Smoke

Drag Eye Enhance out towards your hairline to create a soft, feathered wing. Most of the product should remain on your lashline so that the wing has a subtle, smoky look.

STEP 6
Finish with Eyeliner and Mascara

Apply brown eyeliner to your waterline and upper lashline. You can also use your precision brush to create a soft wing with the eyeliner. Curl your lashes and apply a volumizing mascara. Jinghan wears Rock ‘N’ Kohl in Barbarella Brown and Full Fat Lashes.

STEP 7

Sculpt Your Cheekbones

Tap a contour brush, like Powder & Sculpt Brush, into the Face Bronzer shade. Starting under the apple of your cheek, swirl the brush in circular motions out toward to your temple.

STEP 8

Apply Blush

Add a Flush with Cheek to Chic

With a blush brush (Jinghan uses Blusher Brush here), sweep Cheek Swish from the apple of your cheek to your temple, blending both blush and bronzer as you swipe. Pat the Cheek Pop shade onto the apple of your cheek with the tip of the brush for a pop of pink.

STEP 9

Highlight Your High Points

Lightly dust Face Highlight (aka Charlotte’s Bar of Gold highlighter) from the top of your cheekbone to the top of your browbone in a “C” shape. Use a small blending brush, like Wayne Goss Brush 18, to highlight underneath your brows.

STEP 10

Add a Nude Lip

This soft, glowing look goes particularly well with a natural nude lip for extra polish. Choose a shade that flatters your skin’s undertones. Jinghan wears Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk underneath K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Nude Kate.

Add Smoke for a Nighttime Look

STEP 11
Create a Smoky Wing

Transitioning to nighttime is as easy as adding some extra smoke. With your flat eye shadow brush, pack Eye Smoke onto your lid in a soft wing shape. Use a precision brush to smudge Eye Smoke along your lower lashline.

STEP 12
Enhance and Highlight

Tap a fluffy blending brush into Eye Enhance and use it to blend the edges of your smoky wing until they’re soft and diffused. Tightline your eyes with black eyeliner (Jinghan wears Rock ‘N’ Kohl in Bedroom Black) and add another coat of mascara. You can also line your upper lashline with black liquid eyeliner, like The Feline Flick. Try laying the tip of the pen flat against your eye and using tiny strokes for better control. Use your precision brush to apply Face Highlight to the inner corners of your eyes for an instant eye-brightening effect.

STEP 13

Add a Gorgeous Golden Glow

Let your features catch the light by dusting the palette’s Face Highlight shade over your cupid’s bow, browbone, cheekbones, and the sides of your nose. Add your favorite neutral lipgloss for a polished lip look (Jinghan wears Lip Lustre in Ibiza Nights here).

STEP 14

Finish with a Dark, Dramatic Lip

For dramatic glamour, add a dark lip color, like a deep wine or plum shade. Jinghan wears K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Night Crimson over Lip Cheat in Bad Romance.

If you’ve ever looked at Charlotte Tilbury’s red carpet work, you’re probably familiar with her inimitable style. Her signature combination of dewy, candlelit skin, smoky eyes, and plush lips has become the go-to look for bombshells everywhere. But even though the looks she creates for some of the world’s most iconic celebrities (her client list includes Kate Moss and Kim Kardashian—no big deal) undoubtedly take hours and an entire glam squad to achieve, Charlotte’s namesake makeup line is one of the easiest to use we’ve found.

Case in point: the new all-in-one smoky eye palette we’re pretty smitten with. Not only does it come with four of Charlotte’s most beloved products, it’s also basically foolproof, thanks to a numbered design and super-blendable powder formulations. To give you an up-close-and-personal look, we asked makeup artist Manny MUA to create an easy, everyday full-face look using the Smokey Eye Beauty palette and some other Charlotte Tilbury favorites—like Magic Cream, Air Brush Flawless Finish Powder, and Hot Lips Lipstick in Kim K.W. Follow along as Manny shows us how it’s done and shares his unfiltered opinion about Charlotte’s line.
